Heron Stained Glass Window

This stained glass window was made for a client who lives across from the Intracoastal Waterway in the Sea Gate community, Newport, NorthCarolina.
The homeowner had an eclectic interior style of Victorian to rustic to beach throughout the home using soft umber browns, golds and bold steps of secondary colors. This decorating effort came together beautifully!
It was now my job to compliment all of the design aspects of the decor with a heron and a natural Down East and tropical North Carolina appeal.

I really enjoyed doing this panel...

Celtic Compass Rose

Stumbling around I came across a twist on the traditional compass rose design made using a Celtic knot. This one from Da Vinci's Workshop was made for tile but can easily be adapted to stained glass or mosaics. The design is copyrighted so please ask their permission or use policies if you use it.

Just finished an oval version of my popular Holy Spirit window. Added in this design was two banner areas marking an anniversary. The window size is 18" x 24".
Final destination is a church in the West Indies on the island country of Nevis.

Recently finished cropped version of the Holy Spirit stained glass design I make.

The frame size needed to be 38". I also modified the inner border for an overlapping effect and brought out the size of the dove into the background to compensate for the smaller panel size. The doves are the same exact size in all windows.

The winning suggestion for a central motif theme is "Fleur de Lis".

The pattern has been uploaded onto the forum as of 4/15/10 and within 24 hours 34 minutes and 13 seconds a finished stained glass was presented by GeorgianLady. Way to go!

A consolation prize has been added for 2nd and 3rd place in the dash.

Till May 30th members will be working on the "Most Creative" leg of the contest and will end with a vote by June 7th. The winning project will be showcased on the cover of a new stained glass pattern book titled "Center Motif's" by Down East Stained Glass and the contributer of the winning panel will be awarded some very nice prizes.

Trying out a new way to make stained glass patterns where I take a photo of the original draft and re-size it to fit a standard 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper for printing. You have to then print the original draft (new size) and using a light box, trace over the pattern. This leaves you with a simple line drawing of the pattern. You can then make personal edits and instructions.

Here is a new stained glass pattern I drew up to do this.

Stained Glass Contests

Seems that even during a sluggish economy glass folks still know how to support vendors with sponsorship opportunities with contests that revolve around creativity.

For example...(click to visit >>) StainedGlassville is having a contest with some interesting twists. Members will participate in choosing the stained glass pattern design concept for a new book. With a simple idea or suggestion based on the theme for the book "Center Motifs" they will be awarded a prize if their idea chosen by the author.

The pattern will then be drawn up for the second leg of the contest where a first completed stained glass piece from the design gets a prize and finally the members piece of the most creative use of the pattern voted by their piers.

Finally the stained glass work chosen in the final vote will be used on the cover of the new book along with credits inside to all of the contest winners.
Contest is open to all SGV members and all projects will be viewable by both members and casual visitors to the forum.

Another contest currently running over at (click to visit) Artisan's of Glass (AOG) where the theme is "Spring".
The contest "Spring Forward" requires participants to include a reasoning how their project relates in theme to spring and will be judged on this by a member poll. Two categories or options are available... "Cold Glass" and "Hot Glass". Entries must meet certain criteria with minimal requirements.

AOG's contest is open and viewable for members only.

Stained Glass Weather Vane

I really enjoyed doing this small panel of a clients friends weather vane.
The process is using copper overlay that is bead soldered then set over the field of the panel. The window accents were done with paint fired in a kiln. I also used copper patina then overlapped that with black to get a nice weathered bronze finish on the geese and left the roof top a copper patina which is also using an overlay with copper and solder.

Custom Tiffany Peacock Pattern

Work in progress is this peacock window designed from a Tiffany Studios original stained glass window. The challenge for me is to expand the design to fit the clients eyebrow shaped window opening. I added additional balusters and some more background detail including another boat. The overall size when finished is 57" wide by 50" tall.

I'll post more images during the work progress and when the finished panel is installed.

Here's the finished window precariously hanging onto my bench.
I should have better photo's once installed.

Tiffany Peacock Stained Glass Panel Progress

I have one side soldered and now am using the whole bench to flip over the panel. It's nearly impossible to do otherwise and without reinforcement bars. Bars will be installed later once the back side is finished and I flip it back over.
Turning a large window this way is very easy to do and is quite safe. There is a lip at the bottom of the window held securely to the bench with 2 1/2" deck screws preventing the panel from sliding off. I also attached 2 support braces on either side of the bench to keep the whole process at a good angle to easily lift the glass off and turn it around.

I'll post more photos as I go along :)

Old & New Stained Glass Comes Together

I restored the old medallions for the church and await the committee approval on my proposed drafts. Using windows from the soon to be demolished old church by inserting them in a newly constructed stained glass window is both challenging and rewarding.

Restorations included removing bulging, repairing a few pieces of glass, cleaning and re-weatherproofing or cementing the window. The original perimeter lead was also replaced with new 3/8" flat lead that matches the rest of the window. This new lead will accept the new surrounding pieces of glass and be easier to solder to. The small trick in replacing the old perimeter lead is to carefully cut it mid way on the outside glass segments and gently heat up the old solder joints to release the old lead.
Cutting the lead allows you to rock free the old lead without twisting the attaching lead you are keeping. Once the old lead is removed you now have a tinned area to attach the new lead. Without this tinned area soldering becomes nearly impossible due to the oxidation of the old window. In this case the windows are over 100 years old.
The original lead held up remarkably well for it's age and doesn't need replacing.

I am bidding on an eyebrow transom "Good Shepherd", two sidelites and matching half round panels. This will complete the entry way of the church.

Found a really neat free spider pattern from Vit-Mar. Went looking around some more and stumbled across this spider panel set also from Vit-Mar.

Skull Pirate with Crossed Swords is offered free from "FreeStainedGlassDesign. com". The pattern along with all of the others they have are available in "eye" (GlassEye), "pdf" (Adobe Acrobat) and good ole "JPEG" (Joint Photographic Experts Group) formats.

Celtic Knot Transom Panel

I recently finished this stained glass window using a simple but interesting Celtic knot design. These patterns are a bit tricky to layout initially but in time you get the overlapping right and it all looks good in the end.
Baroque clear glass was used for the main background. A medium green 50 mm faceted jewel for the center, a wispy green by Spectrum for the ribbon and a soft seeded amber by KOG for the inner background.
This panel is centered between two of the same size but contain a simple clear beveled star surrounded by again Baroque clear. The 3 panel set is very attractive overall.

Peace Dove Transom Window

Here is my latest stained glass pattern where I just finished numbering the drawing. There are a total of 395 pieces of glass to this 3 panel set. The ribbon area will have the saying "Be Strong in the Lord" and "Peace Be With you". The bottom corner areas will have accents of dogwood flowers.
The panel set will be installed in the transom of a local church with beveled glass sidelites beneath. Overall size is 8 feet wide by 4 feet tall.
I'll take photos when the installation is complete...

Self publishing stained glass pattern book.

With all of the marvels of the internet there are some things you can do that in the past was either financially impossible or tremendous work.
The one thing I am pointing out is how easy it is to self publish a book. In my case it was creating a hard copy of all of my stained glass patterns.
The printing company Lulu.com has made it possible for authors to create books of their work and offer them for sale without printing minimums. Beyond books they also have other templates for calendars, posters and many other format medias.
I strongly recommend anybody with an idea or artistic content to look into self publishing.

Autumn and Stained Glass

As summer winds down and the kids get back to their school schedules we start to look toward getting a few extra stained glass projects done. The cooler temperatures and coming holidays create an environment in most of our studios for a need to produce atmosphere :)
Many homeowners use this time on the calendar to spruce up their dwellings and often include stained glass in their plans. It seems like everyone who put off decorating during the summer months all join in and expect completion of their commission by the holidays. If you have a retail studio you know exactly what I mean!
This is not a bad thing but would be nice if it spread out a bit more to allow projects to be concluded. In a previous studio I worked at we jokingly used the term "midnight stained glass" more than once.

Many craft fairs are run throughout the fall months where stained glass crafts are often available. Seasonally themed items sell well mixed into a showcase of glass wares.
Holiday decor in glass is very popular and with the internet available along with the hundreds of stained glass books on the subject there is quite a bit to choose from for pattern ideas and inspiration.

I like to start with an image search. Here's a few helpful image search links:

Graphite Transfer Paper

I have been asked by people who visit my studio what I use to transfer my stained glass patterns with. Most assume it's the commonly used means of transferring material "carbon paper".

Carbon paper works fine to transfer your pattern but if you need to erase it this is nearly impossible. Graphite paper on the other hand works just as well for transfers but it also can be removed with an eraser.
In an earlier post I showed how a pattern is created using folds. The transfer paper used here is also graphite.

Graphite paper is used by woodworkers needing to recreate a pattern or template on wood and again is easily removed as compared to carbon paper. Graphite paper is available in rolls and large sheets from most art supply stores and online merchants.

Cleaning soldering iron with sal ammoniac block

Here's the way I clean my soldering iron tips when they get crud build up or the solder flow gets poor off the iron.

The creative pattern skills by a member over at StainedGlassville are on display and is the pattern that is being used in the latest contest.
The member Kev created the pattern and theme for this event.

Stained glass patterns can be found both free and for sale online. The web is a great place to find stained glass patterns and I found one of the best ways to find specific patterns is to do a google image search.
Here's an example image search for cross stained glass pattern. What is nice about doing image searches is you get to see the actual stained glass pattern and can browse the results.
Once you have found a pattern to your liking click on the image to visit the hosting site. Be sure to check with the web site owner for use restrictions prior to printing or downloading their pattern.
Searching for more free stained glass patters using the standard search of web pages works well too but again browsing images works best :)

This technique for cutting glass is sort of unusual but has been the way we have cut glass for many years. The advantage is great control of the cutter especially when going over divots and lines in art glass. The wheel of the cutter is easily kept in the parameters of the pattern template. The downside of this technique is it takes months if not years to master.

Here's the previous design made from the folding process transferred to another copy ready for template cutting. I'll use copper foil shears due to the intricate design even though the window will be done using lead. Reason for this is the narrower 1/8" lead I will use has a thin heart or vertical core thickness.

The pattern segments have been numbered to coincide with the original draft to keep tabs on where the glass when cut ends up.

Here's an example how to create a stained glass pattern using page folds. The original draft in the upper right section is easily tranferred (mirrored) into the bottom right section of the pattern.
Now you can fold the pattern on the vertical line and transfer the design to the left side of the pattern. Once done you now have a completed pattern that can be duplicated onto a working copy for templates. The original drawing is used for constructing the stained glass window.

With all of the new computer software allowing printed versions of a stained glass template we seem to forget about basics. The best technique still today is to create a full size draft of the panel to be made and when doing so create a "pattern" or template copy.
Print out tiled patterns as you would straight from your computer then transfer the pattern to a heavy weight working copy. Then transfer that copy to another pattern copy that will be used to create the actual template or pattern pieces.
Once you have the two copies you are ready to cut up the pattern copy with pattern shears. This may seem a bit of work but in the end will make a lot of sense and will guarantee a good fit.
A good type of paper to use that remains rigid but is easy to cut with pattern shears is #70 lb. kraft.
Large size graphite paper will be needed for pattern transfers and is available at most drafting and craft supply stores.

Quilters have often used stained glass patterns. The great thing is many websites that offer stained glass instruction and galleries also offer free stained glass patterns that may be used for other crafts including quilting.
The patterns may also be adapted to many other crafts where a simple line drawing is all that's needed.
